Financial aid will be granted to allow flexibility for students that have been impacted on an as needed basis for the 2020-21 year only.
Almost a third of global population lacks physical or economic access to safe drinking water and two thirds lack access to safe sanitation. Untreated water together with lacks infrastructure results in water-born disease. Access to water is compromised particularly in conflict areas, but water can also contribute to conflict as 62 countries share bodies of water. This challenge therefore addresses the need for access to safe drinking water and sanitation worldwide.
Lack of decent work results in poverty as well as limited access to basic human rights including food, water, health care, and education. Many low-wage jobs threaten workers’ overall health and wellbeing through occupational hazards, workplace abuse, and long-term toxic exposures. Globally, 152 million children participate in child labor. This challenge promotes decent work that allows for global human health and wellbeing.
Over 600,000 people around the world are killed in intentional homicide or in a violent conflict. Approximately one third of women globally have experienced sexual violence. Frequent mass shootings in the United States regularly shake the public. Aside from the tragic loss of human life, violence has lasting negative consequences on communities worldwide. This challenge addresses global expressions of violence to promote peace and security for all.
Environmental benefits and risks are not evenly distributed across all communities. Some communities are excluded from decision-making about resource management which results in limited access to ecosystem goods and services as well as greater toxic exposures. Native tribes around the world are frequently excluded from environments in which they thrived for generations. Low-income communities or people of color are more likely to be exposed to environmental risks including consequences of climate crisis, pollution, and waste. This challenge therefore addresses the unevenly distributed access to nature and natural resources.
United Nations SDG’s prominently feature reproductive, neonatal, and children’s health as over 300,000 women worldwide die during pregnancy or at childbirth and 5.6 million children under 5 die annually. In the United States, maternal mortality doubled in the 21st century. These outcomes disproportionately affect people of color, for example, African-American women have three times higher rates than white women. Access to family planning is a key factor in women’s equality while also stabilizing population growth globally. This challenge therefore addresses issues related to reproductive, neonatal, maternal, and children’s health worldwide.

The works in Signal were translated into Morse code from anti-war/anti-patriarchy poems and writings by women. Some of these women spoke out when their actions were socially unacceptable. Some were put into detention because of their writings.
Many of the writings are Landays. The Landay (or Landai) is a traditional Afghan poetic form consisting of a single couplet of two lines long and 22 syllables. This form traditionally is performed by women orally and often whispered into ears from a woman to woman in order to remain anonymous. Many of the themes deal with love, pain, rage, homeland, war and their daily life where women are prohibited from speaking freely.

Beginning on Monday, August 17, 2020, RC Counseling will continue to provide tele-mental health appointments to currently enrolled students.
After consultation with other college counselors and review of licensing regulations, we have created the following processes for counseling during this time of online/distance learning and social distancing:
+For all students residing in Wisconsin, we can provide telemental health counseling services. We have the capability to use Zoom, a HIPPA approved site. We also offer the option of phone conversations during business hours.
+For students who reside outside of Wisconsin, we are able to consult, assess and refer. Due to regulations and licensing rules, we cannot provide telemental health out-of-state services.
+Telemental health services will be conducted during regular business hours (8 am – 4:30 pm). Services are not provided for emergencies. Students should utilize their local crisis support services, the Crisis Text Line (text START to 741741), the National Suicide Prevention Hotline (1-800-273-8255), or call 9-1-1.
+Email is not a confidential method of communication; therefore, we will limit email use for counseling clients to setting up appointments and forwarding resources.
Our process for scheduling with a counselor remains the same:
+Email [email protected].
+Include a brief statement of what your concern is and when your schedule would allow you to speak with a counselor. The account is monitored throughout the day (during regular business hours) and your email will result in a responding email from one of the counselors providing you with an appointment date/time.
Continue to find us on Facebook and Instagram @rccounseling123 for helpful information, something to make you smile or a reminder that we will all get through this together.

“In retirement, I plan to spend a lot of time baking, spending time outside, and playing a large role in the lives of my nieces and nephews while enjoying more of my husband’s company,” she says.
“I’ll miss the friendships I’ve built with co-workers, along with lifelong friendships that I’ve formed with many students. Working at Ripon College has been one of life’s greatest gifts, and through those relationships provided me with a living kidney donor! Thank you!”
David Woodward was the director of financial aid since coming to Ripon College in August 2013.
In retirement, he says, “I have spent the last eight months catching up on house projects after being away for six years and spending time with my wife and family. The last month, I have learned how to use an Instapot and air fryer and also patience.

She received the James Underkofler Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2005.
She now plans to move closer to family, be more involved in the lives of her 10 grandchildren, travel and pursue hobbies.
“Everything I enjoyed most about my role at the College was unfortunately eliminated with the final phase-out of the German program in 2017,” she says. “That includes: doing what my life experience and academic training prepared me to do — teach German; taking students (sometimes their first air travel or even their first travel outside Wisconsin) on Maymester trips to visit Ripon’s study-abroad program in Bonn, followed by study trips to Berlin and Leipzig, or to Vienna, Salzburg and Munich; witnessing the transformative power of a study abroad semester in students’ lives; securing outside grant funding to make Bonn and Maymesters affordable for students; the close mentoring relationships developed with German minors and majors; the close mentoring relationships and friendships developed with the language assistants from Bonn; and finally, sharing with students in the joy of weddings, baby showers and baptisms.
“So what does that leave to miss now? I will miss being in the classroom, the students, and Ripon’s supportive, caring faculty and staff community.”

We are surrounded by objects that we know so well, we eventually overlook them. These objects, due to our constant exposure to them, can easily become mundane, every day, and uninteresting. What I like to do is take these everyday objects, such as air conditioners and light fixtures, and dissect them by taking every shape I can from the object itself, begin to play with them, and transform them into something new and unrecognizable. It is a very meditative process to destroy objects and rebuild the pieces into something new.
What I want my artwork to do is point out some of the unique shapes that come from everyday objects. By transforming mundane things into unrecognizable collages filled with creatures, patterns, and places, I am making people more curious about the smaller objects they pass by every day. I am giving people more reasons to explore and seek inspiration in things they won’t usually take a second glance at.
I am working with the concept of absence versus presence in photography. The beginning of this project started with an interest in my memories of family and friends. I take the main figures within these images, and in their place, sewing thread to re-inhabit the body shape. When I was physically cutting the figures from the photo, I emotionally experienced a feeling of them literally being cut out of my life.
The presence of the string where the figure is missing is a way of trying to recreate them, becoming a way of bringing the figures back into the photograph. The thread then becomes an important part of recreating the memory. I want the viewer to reflect on the narrative of our past experiences with others and how the memory of those times can be kept, even if friends and family are no longer present.

This series defies the traditional function of a mirror, creating a situation where the viewer is not in the reflection. The minimal compositions create a need for more than superficial analysis, as the warped reproduction within the silver-lined glass turns an undoctored photograph into a mysterious portal. The texture of the lights and the sharp contrast against the darkness dominate the intentionally obscured images, asking the viewer to reflect further on the series.
As a trans artist, it is important to tell my story, and the narrative in this series is about the trans dream: a bright goal surrounded by the dark, terrifying, and lonely experience of being trans. The hate received on a near-daily basis puts trans people in a situation where they have to decide if their journey is worth the pain. Mirrors also refer to portraiture – a reflection of the self, and self-reflection is a major part of the trans identity.

With admiration and sensitivity, I find myself continuously capturing raw emotion in mundane moments within my work. While I have a fascination with photographing human figures, I also find myself having excitement for works that depict natural lifestyles. In my photos, I seek forced perspective and moods of light and dark emotion, all while being captured with a spontaneous, yet quiet, incognito facade from me being behind the camera. As an artist, I feel that I have a great responsibility to document details that will soon be gone. I have found myself in a moment of time in my life where documentation has never been more essential.
With this specific work, I have found myself highly influenced by Depression-era photographers and documentary photography, notably artists who document organic emotion from distinct moments of the world’s history. The entire world was struck with an instantaneous rush of fear, uncertainty, and uncovered emotion that evolved overnight. By documenting details of the world during this historical event, as other photojournalists have, I’ve been able to collect evidence of a crisis that will communicate the same organic emotion to generations that will follow.

Dreams of Titans | Dreams of Titans is a journey into a surreal and subconscious world. This body of work is a collection of images that illustrates a broken narrative with two figures posing as titans, within a broken world. Titans are commonly known as characters from classical mythology, but not in a traditional sense, they are heroic underdogs. These figures are adapting and overcoming the tragedy that exists in their world. They are heroes fighting for the good of all people and together making their world a better place.
In the creation process, I use techniques similar to pinhole photography to convey the obstructed viewpoint of a dream. Using this method, I emphasize the idea that this world exists as a blurry, out of focus, vision. Ultimately, through my lens, I am depicting a surreal world that invites the viewer to delve into the journey of the Dreams of Titans.

I create characters that depict both the entertaining aspects of circus performance as well as the more unsettling history that many are unaware of today. This history includes a lack of worker’s rights, exploitation, and even enslavement. In the 1800s, my family performed in traveling circuses. They presented themselves as clowns, acrobats, swords swallowers, and more. I also have taken a great interest in makeup, but not it’s typical purpose such as beautification. I transform myself into different characters, primarily clowns, which allows me to put myself into my family’s history. This series includes photos of myself in full clown attire, performing various emotions for a photographer. The clown is sad and distraught and has every reason to be.

Despite many advances to eliminate poverty globally, over 10% of the world survives on less than $1.90 per day. In the United States, approximately 1 in 8 people live at or below poverty line (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). Inequalities rooted in gender, sexual orientation, nationality, race, ethnicity, and class lead to disproportionate exposure to risks, lack of control over resources, and limited access to decision making. On the country level, poor countries may lack representation in international decision-making despite being more vulnerable to threats such as climate change. Social, environmental, and economic consequences of poverty and inequality affect all of us. This case focuses on reduction in poverty and inequalities within and between countries to support thriving communities worldwide.
Approximately a quarter of the world’s urban population lives in slums without access to basic infrastructure. In the United States, an estimated 553,000 people are homeless and 90,000 of them are chronically homeless (US HUD, 2018). In 2016, almost 900,000 US households experienced eviction (The Eviction Lab, 2018). Negative outcomes include threats to health and wellbeing, particularly for children. This challenge addresses access to
adequate housing worldwide.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees all people the right to life, liberty, and security. Yet this right is challenged by violence, modern slavery, and unfair systems of criminal justice. Intentional homicide and conflict contribute about half a million (UNODC, 2013) and over 103,000 (UCDP/PRIO, n.d.) of deaths respectively. Half of the children around the world experience violence each year. Forced labor and human trafficking affect 40.3 million people (ILO, 2017). Approximately a third of detained people have not been sentenced for a crime. Bribery, lack of transparency, and limited participation in decision-making compromise trust in institutions. This case focuses on limiting violence, promoting peace and justice, and supporting transparent institutions with broad participation.
Almost a third of global detainees are held without sentencing. The United States has the highest imprisoned population and prison population rates in the world (Institute for Criminal Policy Research, n.d.). Vulnerable populations including women, people of color, and LGBTQ are disproportionately affected by discriminatory laws, prosecution, and sentencing. Poor prison conditions including violence, lack of health care, and forced labor threaten human wellbeing. The goal of this challenge is to promote just criminal systems worldwide.
Water, an essential component of human survival, covers almost 70% of the Earth’s surface, yet only 1% of water is available for human uses. Globally, 30% of people cannot access safe drinking water and over 1,000 children die due to water-borne diseases or poor sanitation each day. The majority of water is used in power generation, industry, and agriculture, often leading to depletion of aquifers. Industrial and agricultural activity may pollute water bodies, further threatening human and ecosystem health. Water availability will be further affected by climate change as shifting precipitation patterns will lead to more frequent and longer droughts in some regions. This case therefore aims to prevent further degradation of freshwater resources as well as to promote access to clean water as a universal human right.
The majority of water is used for power plants, industry, agriculture, and to maintain household pools and lawns. Water overuse resulted in overdrawn aquifers and exhausted rivers and lakes. As precipitation patterns change due to climate crisis, some regions around the world will experience lengthy droughts. This challenge addresses the conservation of water as well as adaptation to water shortages.
Last century celebrated numerous medical advances and public health measures that extended life expectancy across the globe. However, health risks are unequally distributed between and within countries. Women and children are particularly vulnerable as women around the world lack access to contraceptives, prenatal and antenatal care and 5 million children under the age of five die annually. Other issues including communicable diseases (e.g. HIV/AIDS, malaria), “lifestyle” diseases (e.g. cardiovascular illness, diabetes), environmental illnesses (e.g. respiratory, diarrheal illnesses), cancer, and mental health issues disproportionately affect low-income, marginalized communities worldwide. In many countries, populations will require more resources as they age. Those in need are often not able to access care either due to lack of facilities or cost. The goal of this case is to promote health and wellbeing for current and future generations worldwide.
Many middle- and high-income countries are facing a population dilemma: smaller population may be necessary to avert environmental crisis,
but aging population creates a difficult demographic transition. In 2050, the population over 60 years of age could reach 2.1 billion. Due to major medical advances people live longer, but that does not always mean that they live better. With advancing age, people face numerous issues including decreased productivity, limited access to resources and decision-making, and access to appropriate health care. This challenge therefore addresses issues associated with a demographic transition and promotes aging with dignity.
Food is essential to human survival: it fuels our bodies and provides livelihoods. Our lands and oceans produce enough food – yet a third is wasted every year. Over 11% of people in the world are hungry and 3.1 million children die as a result of malnutrition annually. In the United States, one in eight people do not know where their next meal might come from (Feeding America, 2018). The future of our food supply will be further challenged by climate change, environmental degradation, and worldwide poverty and inequality. The goal of this case is to ensure continued support for agriculture and fishing so that current and future generations are able to produce and have access to safe, healthy, high quality, and culturally appropriate food.
About a third of the food worldwide is wasted between farm and plate (FAO, 2011). From leaving unsightly produce in the field due to consumer demand for uniform produce to the leftovers in our fridges destined for the landfill, much food, and with that, resources including fossil fuels, fertilizers and pesticides, soil, and water, are wasted. In landfills, food decomposition produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to the climate crisis. This challenge addresses food waste throughout the production chain globally.

Ripon College’s five-course Catalyst curriculum rigorously develops the 21st-century skills that employers seek while streamlining the path to graduation. This one-of-a-kind academic flexibility gives you the opportunity to pursue multiple majors and minors, experiential study, participate in clubs and organizations, and hold internships – all in four years.
Catalyst consists of five seminars, two in the first year, two in the sophomore year, and the applied innovation seminar in the junior year. The first four seminars are designed to develop the essential skills students need to work collaboratively and independently in the junior seminar, in which they will work in teams mentored by faculty members as they develop and present proposed solutions to large, open-ended questions. The seminars also provide grounding in some basic college-level academic skills and expose students to a range of disciplinary approaches. Graduates who complete the Catalyst curriculum earn a Concentration in Applied Innovation, which documents on the transcript that a graduate has mastered the skills of oral communication, writing, critical thinking, collaboration, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, integration and intercultural competence.
