Notes: "Coins depicting Faustina the Elder are some of the most easily obtained coins today. The reason is that her husband, emperor Antoninus Pius, had millions of these coins minted after her death. The couple lived during one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods of Roman history. Antoninus built a temple out of love for his wife, and after her death, which was deeply mourned throughout the empire, he even declared her a goddess, as noted on the reverse of this coin. Evidence from other coins suggests that Faustina the Elder was very charitable. She had set up a fund enabling poor girls and young women to obtain a good education." -Nick Werner, Class of 2001
