Algorithms, Rhetoric, and Political Controversy: Tracing the Effects of Automation on Public Discourse
April 16, 2018 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
The Communication Department will be hosting a talk with Ripon College alum Jeremy Johnson. He will be discussing how algorithms have changed patterns of social and political interaction by deciding what we see and when we see it. Through the lens of rhetoric, this talk will explore how algorithms on Google, YouTube, and Facebook shape electronic worlds and alter political reality. Moving between ancient Greek theory and information theory, the talk will take up the task of advocating for more just and equitable algorithms and online platforms.
