{ Telephone Instructions }

Ripon College provides basic telephone service to all students in residence halls at no additional cost. Basic telephone service includes a telephone in each sleeping area, local calling service and voice mail for each resident student.

Resident students desiring long-distance calling service have four options: They may utilize a pay phone, a cell phone, a credit card or prepaid calling card, or the College's long-distance calling service program.

The College's long-distance calling service program is provided by Campus Communications. Long-distance calls placed through this program have no surcharges and no federal or state taxes. It should be noted that long-distance calls placed from a pay phone and/or utilizing a credit card are subject to surcharges that range from $.25 to $2.65 per call. These types of long-distance calls also are subject to federal and state taxes. All domestic calls are $.10 per minute. For exact International rates, call Campus Communications directly at 1-800-965-4838.

If you elect to utilize the College's long-distance calling service program, you will be assigned a seven-digit personal identification number (PIN). The PIN must be entered whenever you make a long-distance call. Campus Communications will bill you on a monthly basis for all calls charged to your PIN.

Voice Mail Service

Residence hall rooms are designed for either single or double occupancy. Voice mail in all rooms that have the possibility of double occupancy will be set up designed for two users; User 1 and User 2, also referred to as User 91 and User 92. Rooms that can house only one student will be set up with single voice mail. The Finance Office will assign you a four-digit password that will allow you to retrieve our messages. You will keep the same password for the full academic year. If you make a room change, that number will be programmed into your new room. Your name will be pre-programmed in the message that greets your voice mail caller. NOTE: Rooms with double voice mailboxes also have a host mailbox. This mailbox will hold one message, and the password for all host mailboxes is always the last four digits of your residence hall telephone number.

Retrieving Messages
Your voice mail messages can be retrieved from any touch-tone telephone by following the instructions listed below.

FROM YOUR RESIDENCE HALL ROOM

  • Step 1: Pick up your receiver and listen for a stutter dial tone. The stutter dial tone indicates that you or your roommate have a new message or messages. Please note that the telephone still will function with a stutter dial tone to allow you to make or receive calls without retrieving new messages.
  • Step 2: To retrieve a new or saved message from your residence hall room, dial 777 (the access code).
  • Step 3: You will be prompted to enter your four digit password, which is assigned to you by the Finance Office.
  • Step 4: After entering your password, you will be prompted to enter either user 1 or user 2. To determine which user you are, dial 777, enter your password and press 1, if that does not let you get your messages, then you know that you are user 2. You also can contact the Finance Office to determine which user you are. After you have entered the system with your password, you then can play, save or delete your messages. Please note that the voice mail system will save up to a total of 15 messages per student. New or saved messages will be stored for 21 days before being automatically erased. After being deleted from the system, messages cannot be retrieved.

NOTE: The stutter dial tone only activates when there are new messages. After messages have been played, you will not get a stutter dial tone. (When there are two students in a room and you get a stutter tone after you have listened to your messages, then the messages are for your roommate.) In a double room, if you both have listened to your messages and you still get a stutter tone, contact the Finance Office at extension 108.

FROM ANY OTHER TOUCHTONE PHONE

  • Step 1: When using another campus phone, dial the voice mail access number (777). When using a phone off campus dial (748-8777). Be sure if you are calling from long distance that you use the area code first (920-748-8777).
  • Step 2: When asked if you have a mailbox on the system, press the * key.
  • Step 3: Enter your 10-digit mailbox number, including the area code (920-74X-XXXX).
  • Step 4: Enter your password and then what user you are, 1 or 2
  • Step 5: You can now listen to any new or saved messages.

Nuisance Call Resolution Procedure

Nuisance telephone calls of a threatening, obscene or harassing nature are illegal under the ordinances of the City of Ripon and the laws of the State of Wisconsin. It is, therefore, the legal obligation of Ripon College to investigate and prosecute individuals making such nuisance telephone calls. If you are a victim of nuisance telephone calls, you are encouraged to initiate a formal investigation. Formal investigation involves methods used to try to identify where calls are originating.

Customer Originated Trace
Residence hall telephones are equipped with a Customer Originated Trace (COT) feature. This feature allows people to trace calls from their telephone when harassing telephone calls are received.

To use the Customer Originated Trace (COT) feature:

  • When a nuisance call is received, hang up the telephone to end the conversation.
  • Immediately pick up the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  • When you know the normal dial tone is established, press *57 on a touch-tone telephone.
  • A message will confirm if the trace has been successful. A busy signal indicates that the COT feature is not available on that extension.
  • Make a note of the time, date and the number of the telephone on which you received the harassing call.
  • Hang up.
  • Contact the Ripon Police Department at 748-2888. You will need to file a complaint form. Also be sure to contact the Director of Residence Life (ext. 146) and Chris Sabel in the Finance Office (ext. 108).
  • The Ripon Police Department will decide if this is serious enough to subpoena the phone records from the local phone company. If the information is retrieved, it then is up to the victim if they choose to press charges or not. Internal sanctions are an option to formal charges.

NOTE: COT must be used before the next call comes in. If you receive another incoming call before you press *57, the wrong call will be traced. Please note that some incoming calls cannot be traced by *57.
