{ Sigma Chi }

The Sigma Chi Fraternity is founded on three main principles : Friendship, Justice and Learning.  These principles are practiced everyday in more than 213,000 living brothers worldwide.  These brothers come together with different talents, temperaments and convictions to live by the values taught through the Sigma Chi Fraternity. The fraternity was started in 1855 at the University of Miami (Ohio) by seven very noble and well-respected men.  Since its founding, Sigma Chi has overcome many great obstacles but has managed to spread itself across North America with 218 active chapters in the United States and Canada, as well as 145 alumni chapters around the world. In 2005, Sigma Chi celebrated its 150th anniversary and was honored by the United States Congress, a first among Greek letter societies.

The Ripon Sigma Chi's are a shining example of what makes the Fraternity as a whole excel.  The Epsilon Lambda chapter was chartered in 1955 at the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Sigma Chi. Since then, the Ripon Sigs have led the campus in many different aspects. John Wayne, the famous film actor and Sigma Chi alum, once said "Men join fraternities; Leaders of Men join Sigma Chi." That quote certainly echoes true for our chapter through athletics, student organizations and our academics achievement.

Sigma Chi has an outstanding reputation worldwide and, because of this, there are strict requirements in admitting new members.  For example, all potential pledges must have a minimum GPA of at least a 2.5. This alone does not merit acceptance to the fraternity; instead, Isaac M. Jordan, an original founder of Sigma Chi, proposed the minimum requirements for a man to pledge Sigma Chi. Known toda as the Jordan standard, it reads:

A Man of Good Character……

A Student of Fair Ability……

With Ambitious Purposes……

A Congenial Disposition……

Possessed of Good Morals……

Having a High Sense of Honor and

A Deep Sense of Personal Responsibility.
