Student Support Services

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded United States Department of Education TRIO program and provides a network of academic, personal and career services to 160 students on the Ripon campus who are first generation, lower income or physically or learning disabled.

To qualify for Student Support Services, students must meet one of the following criteria listed below:

  • First-generation college student: students whose parents did not graduate from a four-year college
  • Low-income: students whose household income meets U.S. Department of Education Federal TRIO Program Low-Income Levels
  • Learning and/or physically disabled: students who have appropriate documentation of a learning and/or physical disability

For those students who hold documentation of a physical or learning disability, Student Support Services in conjunction with faculty members, offers individualized writing support, test-taking accommodations, note takers and specialized computer programs.

Student Support Services provides the following services to qualified students free of charge:

Academic and Life Guidance

Guidance toward choosing a career and major is available. Career shadowing opportunities are offered to students when possible. Information about note-taking, exam preparation, goal setting and time management.

Peer Contacts

Peer Contacts are students hired by the Student Support Services to meet regularly with first year eligible students to assist with the academic and social transition from high school to college. Peer Contacts have gone through training and are meant to serve as a positive influence and resource to incoming students.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available to all Ripon College students. Tutors are students who have been recommended by their professors and trained by the Student Support Services staff. Tutors are meant to serve as a supplement to faculty assistance. Free tutoring is available for selected participants in Student Support Services, with a small fee charged to non-participants and inactive program-eligible students. Skill Development and Workshops

All are welcome and encouraged to join us for our various skill development and financial literacy and intelligence workshops. These events help students plan for a sound, reasonable and workable financial future.

Paper and Resume Writing Assistance

Students can receive assistance on creating and editing papers, as well as composing resumes and formulating cover and thank-you letters. A resume-writing workshop is offered every spring to all students on campus.

Cultural Enrichment Experiences

Student Support Services provides opportunities for participants to experience cultural activities and events on and off campus. Past events have included trips to Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Appleton to see productions like The Lion King, Wicked, Stomp, Lord of the Dance, and more.

Bridge Program

The Ripon College Bridge Program, sponsored by Student Support Services, is a two-day event designed to help enrich the transition into college for first-year students. The program includes of a variety of fun and informative experiences to aid students in becoming acclimated with their new environment. During this program students will:

  • Form a support network with other first year students, staff, and faculty.
  • Hear about unique opportunities available during your time at Ripon College, including educational workshops, cultural events, graduate school information, and tutoring opportunities.
  • Develop valuable study skills and improve their writing skills.
  • Meet peer contacts, current Ripon College students who serve as an invaluable resource to first year students.
  • Move in early! Become familiar with Ripon and expectations in college before most students arrive to campus.
