Two-Year Post-Doctoral Fellow in Classical Studies

Ripon College invites applications for a two-year appointment as an ACM-Mellon post-doctoral teacher-scholar fellow in Classical Studies beginning August 2010.

This fellowship is one of some two dozen positions made available in various fields by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) for the 14 independent liberal arts college that comprise the consortium. The program extends over a five-year period and is generously funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. (See http://www.acm.edu/postdoc for details of this ACM program.) Awarded by competitive application, this Ripon grant is the first classics position funded in the two years that the ACM program has been in place. The classics fellow will join an ACM-Mellon post-doctoral fellow in Asian religions who began a two-year appointment (2009-2011) at Ripon this semester.

The Ripon classics position involves a half-time teaching assignment of three semester courses each year: a one-semester course in the First-Year Studies Program, a one-semester course in classical studies, each of which may focus on the fellow’s field(s) of interest; and a one-semester course in Greek or Latin language or literature.

The fellow’s professional development will be enhanced by campus-based mentoring with consortial orientation and workshops to introduce the fellow to the challenges and rewards of teaching and scholarship in the liberal arts college. A stipend of $3,000 is available each year for the fellow’s research, travel, and professional development support. At Ripon, an assistant dean and faculty development coordinator organizes an attractive and enriching program of on-campus faculty development opportunities.

The ACM program aims to make a compelling case among new Ph.D.s for the desirability of a professional career engaged in undergraduate teaching and scholarship at the liberal arts college. At the same time, it seeks to strengthen ACM institutions by each fellow’s specializations and fresh approaches to teaching and learning.

Ripon is an easy 75-mile drive from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which has one of the nation’s largest research libraries. In addition to very impressive circulating holdings in classical studies, the library maintains a Greek and Latin Reading Room with non-circulating texts and reference works.

Applicants should send a cover letter, CV, statement of teaching philosophy, overview of research interests and three letters of recommendation to Professor Eddie R. Lowry Jr. (lowrye@ripon.edu), Department of Romance and Classical Languages, Ripon College, PO Box 248, Ripon WI 54971. Review of files will begin Dec. 1 and continue until the position is filled. Preliminary interviews will be held at the APA meeting in January.

Ripon College, a Phi Beta Kappa liberal arts institution is committed to diversity in all its forms and encourages all qualified individuals to apply.
