Two-Year Post-Doctoral Position in Asian Relgions

Ripon College has received support from the ACM-Mellon Post-Doctoral Teacher-Scholar Fellowship program for a two-year appointment beginning in August 2009 in the area of Asian religions.

The post-doctoral fellow would enjoy appointment as a member of the Religion Department and would offer three courses per year in Asian religions. In each year, the fellow would have the opportunity to offer introductory courses and one advanced level seminar in religions of Asia – Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism or Taoism.  Opportunities to mentor Religion majors whose senior capstone projects involve aspects of Asian religions also would be available.

Through our faculty scholarship series or through our brown bag lunch series, the fellow will have the chance to make public presentations for the College community on whatever aspect of Asian religion forms his/her research focus. The fellow also will have the opportunity to participate in programs which focus broadly on pedagogy and teaching development. We would expect the fellow to take advantage of these various opportunities with regular frequency.

The fellow will have discretionary time to pursue his or her scholarly projects. Though not a research library per se, our College library offers good print and electronic resources and interlibrary loan service. Ripon College also has the good fortune to be within easy distance (approximately 70 miles) of the major research library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which houses excellent primary and secondary sources in Asian religions. The University also offers intellectual programming and connections that should be attractive to a fellow.

Please send a cover letter, C.V., statement of teaching philosophy, overview of research interests and three letters of recommendation to Professor Brian Smith, Department of Religion, Ripon College, 300 Seward Street, PO Box 248, Ripon, WI 54971-0248. Review of files will begin Oct. 17 and continue until the position is filled. Preliminary interviews may occur at the AAR meeting in Chicago, Nov. 1-3.
