When John Porter was asked to join the Board of Trustees he saw it as an ideal way to get involved with Ripon College and contribute to the community. He feels he has learned a great deal from his role and, in turn, believes he brings a distinctive viewpoint to the Board. As he is a relatively young Trustee, is not originally from Ripon and did not attend Ripon College, he feels he provides the other Trustees with the perspective of an outsider.
In addition, he says he possesses an open mind and the willingness to tackle and accomplish any job. John also benefits the College through his background in marketing and branding. To him, it is important to perceive the institution as a business in order to ensure the best price and maximum value.
“I think we can help build our value in the market through effective communication of our superlative services and first-rate attributes,” says Porter.
John says his role as a Trustee is rewarding because the work he does and the decisions he makes have a powerful influence on students’ futures.
“It’s certainly fun to be a part of something so exciting given all the changes that are happening around campus,” says Porter. He also says he enjoys being a member of the Board of Trustees because it allows him to work with like-minded individuals for a common cause.
John says he was amazed when he realized the College’s focus on communication.
“Before I became familiar with the reality of the Ripon College campus I assumed the talk about interpersonal relationships and the direct involvement was hype, but it’s true,” says Porter.
He praises the personal interaction that students have at Ripon College and says it is one component of an ideal academic setting.
“I strongly believe that those who develop and retain the ability to effectively communicate with people in a warm, friendly manner will hold a distinct advantage over those whose skill set is primarily keyboard related,” he says.
John considers politics and community development two of his primary interests. He also engages in e-commerce. Basketball and skiing are two of the ways he stays active. In addition, he loves good food and spending time with his family.
For John, it is impossible to pick just one part of Ripon College’s future that he is most enthusiastic about. He notes the leadership of President Joyce and ongoing campus improvements as some of the most encouraging aspects of the institution.
“What excites me the most is the energy and enthusiasm I feel around campus and in the community,” says Porter.
