Philip McCullough believes his extensive knowledge of Ripon College betters his ability to positively influence the College. His experiences have allowed him to experience the College in many different ways including as a student, alumnus, member of the Alumni Board and now parent of a current student. While thoroughly understanding the inner workings of Ripon College, he also is very familiar with higher education institutions given his faculty position at Northwestern University Medical School. He says he believes this understanding is one of his most important contributions to the Board of Trustees.
While Philip remains connected to the institution in various ways, he was compelled to take that relationship one step further and become a Trustee. “I mainly became a Trustee to ‘pay back’ the College for all it provided me for four years,” he says.
As a Trustee, Philip acknowledges that Ripon College, because of its nature, must address some specific challenges.
“Ripon, as is the case with many small private liberal arts colleges, needs to be governed with care due to financial pressures and competition from a taxpayer supported public education system,” says McCullough.
He adds that it is not an easy task for educational institutions to continually remain actively dedicated to a personalized education in the liberal arts tradition. Although running an educational institution does not come without obstacles, Philip feels excited about the future.
“We have fantastic leadership in President Joyce, the vice presidents and the Board of Trustees.”
He also notes a first-rate, dedicated faculty among the promising features of Ripon College.
In his free time, Philip enjoys reading. He also stays active with outdoor recreation. His hobbies include playing golf and biking.
