Harassment hurts.
- It hurts the person who receives it.
- It hurst the person who delivers it.
- It hurts us all.
The harassed person often feels confused, distressed or belittled, even by relatively minor incidents. More serious incidents can destroy the pleasures of working, learning and living at Ripon College. It can hold back development and advancement, can lead to resignations, dismissals and withdrawals, and can ultimately result in permanent physical, emotional and mental injury.
The harasser demeans him or herself, destroys the possibility for cooperation, makes him or herself liable for punitive action as well as civil or criminal suits.
The fact is we all suffer from thoughtless, belittling, intimidating actions. Such acts make life more difficult for us all. Our college is less humane, and our community is less supportive when such actions are tolerated.
