Common Network Questions

Where can I register my RipNet connection, or fill out a room change form?

You have many RipNet registration options:

  1. From your Ripon College e-mail account, e-mail your: name, dorm, room number, port number and extension to RipNetReg.

  2. You can download, complete and send the application to Kemper via campus mail or drop in the basket located in the entry way of Kemper Computer Center.
  3. You can stop down at Kemper and fill out the above corresponding form.

Where can I find documentation on configuring my system to RipNet?

Incoming Freshmen and transfer students receive a packet which includes their username, password, information regarding RipNet and configuration forms for multiple operating systems. We realize that these things can get misplaced during the hectic first few weeks of college, as well as throughout your entire four-year career here. That's why we've made the configurations available through our Web site. Determine what operating system you are running, then follow the corresponding documentation, found here.

A hard copy also is available by stopping at Kemper Computer Center.

Can I receive some assistance in configuring my system?

Student Assistants employed by ITS are more than willing to assist you in the configuration of your system. To schedule an appointment, call X327. (Please inform the student assistant of the particular operating system you are running prior to setting up an appointment.)

I've lost my network connection, what should I do?

1.  Restart your machine; upon startup, see if your connection was restored.

If not then go to My Network Places, found either on the desktop or in the start menu.  Open View Network Connections, located on the left-hand pane.

Then insure that the LAN connection is enabled, and that Dial-up or VPN is not set up as a default.

If you have an enabled connection check to see that you are receiving information.  This can be done by double clicking on the LAN icon, which provides you with connection information.  In the Activity section you should see both sent and received packets increasing.

If you have lots of sent packets, but few to none received, then you will need to make an appointment with the ITS Student Assistants at x327.

2.  What if I have a VPN set up?

Some home networks utilize a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which is set to allow secure internet access.  This secure access is generally noted by a connection dialog box appearing when trying to connect to the Internet.  Using this on the Ripon College network does not work and will result in an ability to have an active connection and programs such as AIM to work, but no connection when Internet Explorer is used.  To disconnect a VPN use the following steps.

  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to tools, internet options and choose the connections tab.
  2. Select the VPN and click remove.
  3. Then choose never dial a connection.
  4. Click Apply to apply the settings then close out of the dialog boxRestart your computer and you should be able to get to the internet

3.  Spyware?

Today one of the biggest killers of internet connections is spyware and viruses.  This has prompted ITS to provide and require all student machines to run anti-spyware and anti-Virus software.  For the best results it is best to update your virus scanner and spyware scanner once a week for maximum protection.  For more information please visit the Virus and spyware section located here.

4.   I can't get to the Internet vs. I can't get to my Mercury folder.

The Internet and Mercury are two different systems utilizing the same cable to share information.  The Internet is an external collection of websites and information, while the Intranet is the internal college owned network, which includes Mercury.  This means that if the internet is down, that you may possibly still be able to connect to your Mercury file.  Now that the difference between the two is explained I will

For directions on how to connect to Mercury please use the instructions here.
