Configuring Windows XP Professional for RipNet

Connecting to your personal folder on Mercury is an easy process for both the Macintosh and the PC user. Unless otherwise noted, these directions will work in all labs on campus, as well as from a personal computer in your room (assuming you have a working network connection).

  • Click on Start.
  • Go to My Computer and right click on it.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click on the Computer Name tab.
  • Type your USER NAME in the Computer Name box.
  • Click the Network ID tab, and start the Network Identification Wizard.
  • Select the first option and hit Next. (This computer is part of a business network, and I use it to connect to other computers at work.)
  • Select the second option and click Next. (My company uses a network without a domain.)
  • Type in RIPNET for the Workgroup name: hit Next.
  • Click Finish.

You will receive another message stating that you have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Click on OK. When your computer prompts you if you want to restart your computer, click NO.

  • Click on Start, then Control Panel.
  • Click on Network and Internet Connections.
  • Click on Network Connections (should be in the lower right corner).
  • Right click on Local Area Connection icon and click Properties.
  • If you do not have a Local Area Connection icon in your Network and Dial-up Connections, your network card is not properly installed.
  • To configure TCP/IP to use ResNet, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
  • Select the options Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  • Click on Advanced. If there are any entries under Default Gateways select them and click remove.
  • Click the DNS tab.
  • If there are any entries under DNS server addresses, select each of them and click Remove.
  • Make sure there is not a check mark in the fields. Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix and Register this connection's addresses in DNS.
  • Click on the WINS tab
  • If there are any entries under WINS addresses, select each of them and click Remove.
  • Uncheck Enable LMHOSTS lookup.
  • Select the option Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
  • Click OK twice.

You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD depending on the options you have selected. After your computer has finished copying files the necessary files, you will be prompted to reboot your computer. Once you reboot, your computer then will be properly configured to use Ripnet.
