Reflections on the April 16 Tragedy at Virginia Tech

President David Joyce, Director of Media and Public Relations Cody Pinkston and Professor of English David Graham share their thoughts following the massacre on a college campus.

Graduates Go Forth and Serve

Graduating members of the Class of 2007 were urged to give of themselves as they go forward to the next stage of their lives. The Commencement theme, "Health and Service," encouraged the graduates to embrace the values of service that they have learned at Ripon and take those values with them as they embark on their new lives. Jonathan Muraskas ’78, Joia Mukherjee, JoAnn Marie Davis and Donald and Marilyn Anderson ’42/’45 were honored for their commitments to health and service. By Jaye Alderson.

A Spirituality for Academia

Professor of Religion Brian Smith provided the address at this year's Awards Convocation April 18. That address is published here. In it, Smith warns against the vague "huggy feely" emotion that can be cultivated by those who follow the recent trend in describing themselves as spiritual rather than religious.

Merline Loves Ripon

Best-selling romance author Merline Thomas Lovelace ’68 returned to Ripon this spring to celebrate the newly formed Friends of Lane Library. Lovelace is hardly a fragile flower. A decorated Air Force colonel who has commanded U.S. Forces around the world, she brings a unique perspective to her novels and her life. By Jaye Alderson.

Leaving Her Mark

When Leone Hoffman ’26 passed away in November 2005, she left a legacy of friendships built over nearly 100 years spent in Ripon. Ann Marie Godfrey shares her memories and the memories of Hoffman's friends who spent a winter day remembering a remarkable woman.

Umbrellas add a bit of additional color to the Commencement landscape. Occassionally seen in small numbers to provide a bit of shade, this year they were out in force to repel light rain showers that plagued an otherwise beautiful outdoor ceremony.
