Wind Ensemble's Nov. 23 concert features an eclectic mix

Nov. 17, 2008

RIPON, Wis. – The Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s fall concert will be held at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 in the Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon’s Rodman Center for the Arts. The group is under the direction of Professor Kurt Dietrich.

The performance will feature a four major works by composers who, in many instances, were affected by political and societal injustice. Selections include “An Original Suite for Military Band” by Gordon Jacob, “Festive Overture” by Dimitri Shostakovich, “Tempered Steel” by Charles Rochester Young, and “A Movement for Rosa” by Mark Camphouse.

“An Original Suite” was composed just less than a decade after Jacob was taken as a prisoner of war in WWI. Years later, Shostakovich, who wrote “Festive Overture” to commemorate part of the Russian revolution, suffered as an artist attempting to create within the oppressive Soviet society. In America, composer Mark Camphouse wrote “A Movement for Rosa” as a tribute to the civil rights revolutionary Rosa Parks. The contemporary piece “Tempered Steel” by Charles Rochester Young features the percussion section and is driven by a strong rhythm.

The band will also play shorter pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Percy Grainger and John Philip Sousa.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (920) 748-8791.
