Wind Ensemble breathes new life into traditional arrangements

April 10, 2008

RIPON, Wis. – The Ripon College Symphonic Wind Ensemble will tackle both traditional and nontraditional music in concert at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, April 13 in the Demmer Recital Hall of the Rodman Center for the Arts.

Conductor Kurt Dietrich chose pieces that he feels challenge the band in many ways. Where one song requires precise intonation another requires great strength, and still another is technically difficult by containing multiple unconventional instruments.

One piece by Robert Smith utilizes anchor chains and a ship’s bell as instruments. The piece, entitled “Songs for Sailor and Sea,” even calls for timpani to be used to simulate whale sounds.

This concert also contains pieces by Bach, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Holst and a John Philip Sousa selection. This mix of style and period grants band members an opportunity to play music not originally composed for band and audience members the opportunity to hear these familiar pieces arranged for a different group than typically plays them.

Dietrich stresses that he wants he concert to be fun for both audience members and band members alike. Of the audience, he adds, “I also want them to see the hard work that the group has put in and the fun that we have together.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information call (920) 748-8791.
