RIPON, Wis. - Jazz trombonist Jiggs Whigham (accompanied by John Harmon) will grace the community with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in the Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon College’s C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Whigham traveled to Germany in 1965 and joined the Kurt Edelhagen Jazz Orchestra at the West German Broadcasting Company in Cologne, Germany. He became head of the jazz department at Cologne University College of Music.
Throughout the years, Whigham’s musical talents have earned him several honors, including “Professor for Life” at the Hanns Eisler College of Music in Berlin, bandleader of the Swiss Radio Band and chief conductor of the Berlin Radio Orchestra. He is currently conductor of the BBC Big Band in Great Britain, artistic director of the Berlin Jazz Orchestra and visiting professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Whigham has authored one book, Jazz Trombone, and currently has two CDs, Try a Little Tenderness and Keeping Up With the Boneses.
Whigham’s debut at Ripon will also include a Saturday workshop sponsored in part by the Barbara Baldwin DeFrees Fund for the Performing Arts. He will talk about his long career as an American expatriate in Europe.
Ticket prices are $15 for adults; $12 for senior citizens age 62 and older, Ripon College faculty and staff; and $8 for youth, age 18 and younger.
