RIPON, Wis. –One of the music world’s most dynamic and invigorating groups, Ferintosh, will bring their unique brand of Scottish-influenced string music to Ripon College’s Rodman Center for the Arts, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.
Featuring David Greenberg on fiddle, Abby Newton on cello and Oshkosh native Kim Robertson on Celtic harp, Ferintosh presents the vibrant folk music of Scotland and of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where Scottish Highland music has continued in a living tradition since the 18th century. From poignant airs to high-spirited strathspeys and reels, their dynamic arrangements unleash both the subtle beauty and rhythmic energy of this timeless music.
In 18th century Scotland, the boundaries between "art" music and the "people’s" music were less distinct than today. The same musicians who performed for the lords and ladies in their castles also played in the town halls for dances. Ferintosh’s unique musical focus transcends modern distinctions between "classical" and "folk" music. Their dynamic arrangements unleash both the subtle beauty and primal energy of this historic music. Their sound combines the soulfulness and energy of traditional Scottish music with the precision and nuance of Baroque music.
