RIPON, Wis. – Ripon College's Ethical Leadership Program recently initiated a new program of case-study seminars for professional and business leaders. Dubbed "Ethical Leadership Institutes," the programs are designed to bring top professionals from business, law, medicine, and other fields together with Ripon College students for a day of study and discussion of selected case studies.
On Monday, Oct. 8, a group of 18 executives from the Milwaukee area were paired with Ethical Leadership Gold Level students, students from SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), and others for a day of intensive examination of instances in which major corporations faced significant issues in ethical leadership. Guided by faculty facilitators, the participants sought to define the issues, consider alternatives, and seek best practices.
Thomas Hefty, president of the Kern Family Foundation, and former head of Cobalt Corporation and Wisconsin Blue Cross Blue Shield presented the luncheon keynote.
“Ethical business is good business,” Hefty emphasized. “The central question in ethics isn’t about making a mistake or a bad decision; it’s about what you do after the mistake is made.”
Ethical Leadership Program Executive Director David Seligman said the day was a huge success.
"Many of the executives were visiting Ripon College for the first time. Their interactions with each other and with Ripon College students provided some of the best that a liberal arts education has to offer," he said.
Seligman added that he hoped host several such institutes each year in addition to the continuing program of Case Studies Seminars that bring a single senior professional to campus for a day of discussions with students.
