RIPON, Wis. – Richard Warch, fourteenth president of Lawrence University, will be the guest speaker at Ripon College’s opening convocation ceremony, 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28 in front of Harwood Memorial Union.
Originally from Hackensack, New Jersey, Warch received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College in 1961 went on to earn a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School in 1964 followed by a Doctor of Philosophy degree in American Studies from Yale University in 1968. He is an ordained minister of the United Presbyterian Church.
An associate dean of Yale College, he was the director of summer plans for Yale and director of Yale’s visiting faculty program. He also served as associate professor of history and American studies at Yale.
Warch first came to Lawrence as vice-president in 1977 and became president in 1979. His 2004 retirement made him the second longest-serving president in Lawrence’s history. During his 25-year presidency, Warch was notably involved with the construction of Briggs Hall and the Wriston Art Center. He was also active in the renovation of Main Hall, Memorial Chapel, and Seeley G. Mudd Library. Saturday, June 5, 2004, was deemed “Richard Warch Day” in recognition of his years of service to Lawrence University.
His publications include the book School of the Prophets: Yale College, 1701-1740. He has also served on the executive committee of the Annapolis Group, an association of the nation's leading liberal-arts colleges.
The opening convocation ceremony commemorates the opening of the academic year and formally welcomes new students to the College and the community. It includes a processional of faculty as well as all first-year students and is open to the public.
