Colegium Musicum: A concert in five ‘languages’

April 15, 2008

RIPON, Wis. – Ripon College’s Colegium Musicum vocal group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 18 in Demmer Recital Hall, Rodman Center for the Arts. The group will tackle songs from multiple cultures, bringing a mix of language and style to the performance.

Director Sarah Hughes chose pieces that were challenging in both language and style. The pieces are in five languages and some mix medieval instruments with the otherwise a cappella voices.

“The Cantigas,” specifically, offered a unique creative opportunity: They were given a single line of music and text and have transformed them into their own version of the song.

The concert selections let the audience hear music from ages long past and from vastly different cultures. The differences are apparent in the music itself and help us see a part of ourselves in a different light.

Hughes said she wants performers and audience members alike to “Recognize that love, grief, pleasure, and loss are universal human emotions that find expression in music at any age.”

The Early Music Ensemble will assist with some selections. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information contact Sarah Hughes at HughesS@Ripon.edu or call (920) 748-8791.
