Wisconsin Brass Quintet brings 'heavy metal' music to Ripon
Sept. 12, 2007

RIPON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Brass Quintet will grace the community with a performance at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21 in the Demmer Recital Hall of Ripon College’s C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts.

Founded in 1972, the Wisconsin Brass Quintet is an ensemble-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. The group is composed of John Aley and Matthew Kuhns, trumpets; Douglas Hill, horn; Mark Hetzler, trombone; and John Stevens, tuba.

The quintet performs hundreds of works from all periods and styles, including compositions by members Stevens, Hill and Hetzler. The quintet currently boasts three CDs, titled Fabrics (Summit Records, 1994), Images (Mark Records, 1997) and The Feast Awaits (Crystal Records, 2005). They have performed throughout the Midwest and across the country, including performances at Carnegie Recital Hall and Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. Their music has been nationally recognized by Verne Reynolds, Jan Bach, Karel Husa, John Harbison, Daren Hagen and numerous other nationally recognized musicians and critics.

“I’ve reviewed over 250 brass recordings in the past five years, and this one is the very best,” said Barry Kilpatrick of the American Record Guide. “The Wisconsin Brass Quintet is a remarkable ensemble that plays with more reckless abandon, warmth, stylistic variety and interpretive interest than almost any quintet in memory.”

Prices are $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens (age 62 and older), Ripon College faculty and staff; and $6 for youth (age 18 and younger). Tickets are available at Ripon College’s Rodman Center for the Arts and at Ripon Drug. For ticket ordering and information, contact the Ripon College Music Department at 920-748-8791.

Now in its 36th year, the Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon Series is made possible through financial contributions from numerous supporters. For gen

eral information concerning the Chamber Music and Jazz at Ripon series, call 920-748-8786.
