APA Style In-Text Citations
When using APA style, give the author’s name and date number each time you refer to the source in your paper. When you use a direct quote include the page number on which the quote appears. The parenthetical reference must come immediately after the end of the quote.
Examples:
She states, “The cow jumped over the moon,” (Viers, 2005, p.3) but offers no evidence to support this claim. The author, date and page number appear immediately after the direct quote.
In her landmark 2005 study, Viers asserts that the cow did leap over the moon in a single bound. No parenthetical citation is needed here because the author and date appear in the sentence and there is no direct quote.
“I can’t believe it,” (p.5) was a common response in the research community when Viers released her findings in 2005. The author and date are included in the text of the sentence, so the writer just needs to indicate the page number of the quote in parentheses.
