Sculpture, photography combine in Ripon College exhibit

Sculpture and photography will be combined in “”a tenuous framework,” an exhibit of work by Milwaukee artists Shana McCaw and Brent Budsberg, to run Nov. 7 to Dec. 7 in Caestecker Gallery, C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts, on the Ripon College campus. An artists’ talk will be presented at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, in the lobby. An opening reception will follow. The exhibit is part of the College’s Caestecker Fine Arts Series.

The artists have collaborated since 2001, investigating ancestral memory and collective history through sculpture, performance and site-specific installation, and more recently with photography and video.

A 19th century Midwestern farmhouse, frequently depicted in unlikely or impossible scenarios, has emerged as a central character in their work. Through it, they examine the psychology of place, ancestral memory, and the passage of time.

McCaw and Budsberg are founding members of the WhiteBoxPainters, a performance art group specializing in large-scale, temporary public projects. McCaw teaches at the Milwuakee Institute of Art and Design and Cardinal Stritch University. Budsberg is a supervisor at the Steve Lacey 3-D Lab at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and has built numerous set pieces for the theatre/film industry.

The two received Milwaukee’s Mary Nohl Fellowship for Individual Artists in the Established Artist category in 2008. They have participated in solo and group exhibitions around the country, projects in Madison and Milwaukee and numerous residencies, including with the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah, and Goldwell Open Air Museum, near Death Valley, California.
