Programming set for Martin Luther King Jr. Week celebrations

Ripon College will pay tribute to the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. throughout the week spanning Jan. 25-Jan. 31, 2015. The theme for the week’s festivities is “Race and the (In)Justice System.”

Schedule of Events

Sunday 1/25:
Keynote Speaker Joseph Frey, 6 p.m., Behr Auditorium.
Joseph Frey of Wisconsin was wrongfully convicted of rape and spent eight years in prison before being exonerated. The College community is invited to listen to Frey tell his story of how he felt (in)justice in his case and how justice eventually prevailed.

Monday 1/26:
Students, faculty and staff are invited to write their written commitment to the “Dream” during lunch and dinner in S.N. Pickard Commons.

Tuesday 1/27:
Broken On All Sides documentary and discussion, 5:30 p.m., Heritage room, with discussion led by Associate Professor of Global Studies Mike Mahoney.
The documentary focuses on mass incarceration across the nation and the intersection of race and poverty within the criminal justice system.

Wednesday 1/28:
The Justice League: Alumni panel, Heritage room, 5:15 p.m.
Ripon alumni who are supreme court justices, public defenders and law enforcement officials will sit on a panel to discuss race and the criminal justice system.

Thursday 1/29:
Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Awards Breakfast, 8:30 a.m., Great Hall.
Three deserving individuals will be awarded and recognized for their service to Ripon College. Entertainment will be provided. Faculty, staff and students are asked to register on the my.ripon.edu portal until Jan. 23, 2015.

Friday 1/30:
Presentation of racial disparities in the criminal justice system, 2:30 p.m., led by Kat Griffith of Ripon High School, Todd Wehr Hall 204.
Griffith has done extensive research on the criminal justice system and its racial disparities.

Saturday 1/31:
Martin Luther King Jr. Giving Back Community Service at St. Charles Youth and Family Services, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, bus leaves at 10 a.m., lunch provided.
St. Charles is a nonprofit human services agency and provides an array of prevention and intervention services for Wisconsin youth, adults, and families. Ripon will work with youth to get them excited for their future.
