Politics Center Announces Two Student Contests

The Center for Politics and the People at Ripon College has announced two contests for current students to earn cash and/or a Bookstore gift card.

Logo Design Contest

Prize: $100 cash prize
Deadline: 11:59 PM on Friday, 17 October 2014

Contest Details: Ripon College students are invited to submit their proposed designs for a logo for the Center for Politics and the People. Contestants of all skill levels are welcome to participate; the idea counts more than the polishing! The Center intends to use its logo both online and in print, in black-and-white and in color. The winning image will graphically and artistically represent the Center’s mission statement (see below) without the use of any words; contestants must ensure that their designs do not imitate existing logos/brands.

Guidelines and Eligibility: Contest is open only to current full-time Ripon College students in good standing. Entries must be submitted via e-mail as a JPG file to [email protected] prior to the contest deadline; please include the contestant’s name, unit number, e-mail address and preferred phone number with each entry. The winning contestant and design will be recognized (and prize money awarded) in November. All entries will become the sole property of the Center and are subject to modification and/or editing prior to official endorsement or use by the Center.

The Abraham Lincoln Essay Contest

First Prize: $200 gift certificate to the Ripon College Bookstore
Deadline: 11:59 PM on Monday, 1 December 2014.

Essay Question: Abraham Lincoln said, “Let us have faith that right makes might; and in that faith let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” After reflecting on this idea and the Center’s mission statement (see below), answer the following two questions:

•How can an individual promote the ideals of good government and policy?
•How should the Center assist in this endeavor?

Guidelines and Eligibility: Contest is open only to current full-time Ripon College students in good standing. Essays are to be typed in 12-point font, double-spaced and must not exceed five pages in length. Please attach a cover page that includes the contestant’s name, address, e-mail address and preferred phone number. Citations of others’ ideas must be documented according to a standard practice in accordance with Ripon College’s academic regulations (accessible at the Ripon College website). Essays must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document via e-mail to [email protected] by 11:59 PM on Monday, 1 December 2014. The winning essay will be chosen (and prize money awarded) prior to the beginning of the Spring 2015 semester. The winning contestant will have the opportunity to present his or her ideas at one of the Center’s Spring 2015 public events. He or she will also be recognized at Ripon College Awards Night in April 2015.

Center Mission Statement: The Center for Politics and the People at Ripon College was created to promote constructive political debate, analyze public policy and foster the engagement of citizens and their government. Inspired by the principles of the American founders and the legacies of our great leaders, the Center will create a forum for dialogue, research, analysis and dissemination of ideas about local, state, national and international issues. Policymakers, academics, experts, candidates and politicians will present and defend their ideas and solutions for the benefit of the country, people and community. Students will learn how to pursue careers in politics and government. The electorate will find scholarly, accessible and relevant research that connects political thought and effective governance.
