Alumnus to address ethics, communication

Contemporary moral argument will be addressed in a talk Oct. 7 by 1985 Ripon College graduate Trevor Parry-Giles. “The Rhetorical Lives and Times of The Manchurian Candidate: Tracing a Cold War Political Trope in Contemporary Moral Argument” will begin at 4:15 p.m. in the North Reading Room of Lane Library on the Ripon College campus.

The presentation is the keynote address for the Forum on Ethics and Communication.

Parry-Giles is a professor in the department of communication at the University of Maryland and director of Academic and Professional Affairs at the National Communication Association. He is the co-author of The Prime-Time Presidency: The West Wing and U.S. Nationalism (University of Illinois Press) and Constructing Clinton: Hyperreality and Presidential Image-Making in Postmodern Politics (Peter Lang).

He also is the author of The Character of Justice: Rhetoric, Law, and Politics in the Supreme Court Confirmation Process (Michigan State University Press). His research has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Speech, Rhetoric & Public Affairs, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Celebrity Studies, and elsewhere. He holds a master’s degree from the University of New Mexico and a Ph.D. from Indiana University.
