Mural to be dedicated Oct. 2 in downtown Ripon

“The Long Way Home,” a mural created by Rafael Francisco Salas, associate professor of art at Ripon College, will be formally dedicated at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. The dedication will take place at the mural site, the south wall of 214 Watson St., owned by Farrell’s Fine Furniture.

The mural depicts the original structure in Ripon, The Long House, and reflects the “the optimism that inspired the creation of Ripon and the city’s transcendence in the face of conflict. The mural reminds us of the proud heritage we share but also the trials we encounter. I designed this mural for the Ripon community and Ripon College together. We share the same legacy and must move forward together as well.” Salas grew up in Ripon and returned to teach at Ripon College in 2006.

“We are fortunate to have an artist with the talent and innovation of Rafael Salas on our faculty,” said President Zach Messitte. “Ripon College cherishes its positive relationship with the town of Ripon. We will continue to do our part to make the historic downtown area a vibrant place for our students and the greater community.”

The project was supported by a $1,400 Fourteen for ’14 grant by the Office of the President of Ripon College, presented to projects that will enhance the Ripon College campus community.
