Ripon College is one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to the 2014 edition of “The Best 378 Colleges” produced by The Princeton Review. Ripon was also recognized in the guide as a “Best Midwestern College,” making the guide’s Top 20 lists for “town-gown relations are great” (ranked #5), “lots of race/class interaction” (ranked #17), and “professors get high marks” (ranked #18).
The Princeton Review does not rank the colleges academically or from 1 to 378 in any category. Instead it reports in the guide 62 ranking lists of top 20 colleges in various categories. The lists are entirely based on student responses to several questions about their school’s academics/administration, campus life, fellow students, and themselves. The Princeton Review explains the basis for each ranking list at princetonreview.com/college/college-rankings.aspx.
“Ripon College offers outstanding academics, which is the primary criteria for our choice of schools for the book,” says Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s Senior VP / Publisher and author of “The Best 378 Colleges. “We base our selections primarily on data we obtain in our annual institutional data surveys. We also take into account input we get from our staff, our 35-member National College Counselor Advisory Board, our personal visits to schools, and the wide range of feedback we get from our surveys of students attending these schools.”
In the guide, Ripon is described by one student as a “close-knit community,” and by another as “…a place where a student’s best interest matters; all other agendas are secondary.”
In a “Survey Says” sidebar in the guide’s profile on Ripon College, The Princeton Review lists topics that Ripon College students surveyed for the book were in most agreement about in their answers to survey questions. The list includes: “Students are happy,” “Registration is a breeze,” “School is well run,” “Students are friendly,” and “Different types of students interact.”
