MADISON, Wis. - The Red Hawks took part in the 2008 Midwest Conference Tournament over the weekend, which saw them finish tied with Knox College for eighth place in the team standings, with 14 team points. Ripon's Erin Gebhardt and Kate Dricken each took home consolation championships playing at the number five and six flights, respectively.
After the team tournament on Friday, which was won by Grinnell, the 10 conference schools competed in the doubles tournament on Saturday. Knox won the number one doubles title, while Lawrence was victorious in the other two. At number three doubles, Ripon's team of Megan Sockness and Brooke Deans made it all the way to the consolation championship match, where they lost 11-9 to Carroll's pair of Tricia Goska and AlexAnna Henneberry.
During Sunday's singles tournament, Ripon's success came mostly at the final two flights. At number five singles, Gebhardt was victorious in the consolation championship match 10-1 over Illinois College's Maddy Ethington. At the number six flight, Dricken duplicated Gebhardt's feat, winning her consolation championship 10-0 over Monmouth's Sarah McLinden.
Grinnell, who won their fifth consecutive team title, scored a tournament-best 81 points. They were followed by Lawrence, Monmouth, and St. Norbert. Beloit finished fifth, while Carroll and Lake Forest finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Knox and Ripon were eighth, before Illinois College, who rounded out the standings with eight points.
