RIPON, Wis. - It's still early September, and already the Red Hawk women's tennis team has won as many matches this season as they did last year. Ripon defeated Marian College 5-4 Tuesday in each team's season opening match.
The Red Hawks struggled early, as their number one and two singles players struggled, each losing in two sets. They would hang tough and show their mettle in the third and fourth singles matches. Ripon's Arielle Denis and Erin Gebhardt each won their matches, respectively, each with tie-breakers. Denis won her tie-breaker in the second set, while Gebhardt won hers in the first. Alecia Kiszonas and Kate Dricken continued that momentum by winning the fifth and sixth singles matches, respectively.
The match was still up in the air going into doubles play. Marian was able to tie the match at 4 by winning the number one and two doubles matches. Ripon walked away with the victory however, as they got a win in number three doubles.
The Red Hawks will hope to keep it up when they'll travel to Lake Forest on Friday to take on the Foresters. That match, which will be the conference opener for both teams, will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Lake Forest, Ill.
