RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks held their own with the UW-Platteville Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon, going into halftime with a tie and taking the lead in the second half. Unfortunately, that score did not hold up for all 90 minutes, as three late Pioneer goals sent UW-P home with a 4-2 victory. Ripon shot the ball six times, scoring on 33 percent of those shots, while UW-P got off 21 shots.
The game looked like it could get ugly fast, with the Pioneers striking first, just 1:07 into the game. Ripon's Jessica Martzahl answered back with a goal in the 14th minute on a great lead pass from Morgan Abert. From there, the two teams played to a standstill for the remainder of the period.
The second half began just like the first, with a goal. This time however, it was Ripon finding the net, with Martzahl's second score of the game for the Red Hawk's first lead of the game. That lead would last 13 minutes, until Platteville's Sarah Miller scored unassisted to tie the game at two. Then, with just over 13 minutes to play, the Pioneers took the lead, when Miller found Allie Metcalfe for the go-ahead score.
Ripon will now start the most important part of their schedule, as they'll travel to Lake Forest College on Saturday for their first conference game of the season. That game will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Foresters.
