Ripon Loses To Conference Leader Grinnell

October 18, 2008

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks faced one of their toughest opponents of the season Saturday afternoon, as they squared off with Grinnell College, who entered the game leading the Midwest Conference with the MWC's only undefeated record. Despite that fact, Ripon held their own with the Pioneers, holding them scoreless for the first 32 minutes, before allowing a pair of goals before halftime. Grinnell would break the game open in the second half with three more goals, en route to a 5-1 victory over the Red Hawks.

The MWC's leading goal scorer, Grinnell's Miki Nakamura, was held in check for much of the first period, until the 32nd minute when she broke a scoreless tie with a goal on a cross from Cynthia Dominguez. Nakamura added her second goal of the game one minute later, this time unassisted.

The Pioneers (13-1, 6-0 MWC) added their third score of the game in the 48th minute on a goal by Becca Mackenzie. They continued to pout it on in the 55th minute thanks to a goal from Frances Leslie. After another Grinnell goal in the 80th minute, the Red Hawks (4-13, 2-6 MWC) finally got on the scoreboard when Brenda Zastrow found the net on a free kick in the 81st minute, which capped the scoring.

The Pioneers shot the ball 22 times, while Ripon managed eight shots on the day, including six in the second half. Ripon goalkeeper Angelica Cooper played all 90 minutes, saving three shots. Grinnell's Laura McElroy and Ingrid Wennerberg combined for four saves.

Ripon will close out their 2008 season Sunday in their season finale against Knox College. That game will begin at 11 a.m. at Prairie Field, and will be followed by the men's contest against the Prairie Fire.
