RIPON, Wis. - After dropping their first two games of the season over the weekend, the Ripon women's soccer team was hungry for a win against Finlandia University (MI) in their first home game of the season. The Red Hawks fixed their hunger, with a 13-0 win over the Lions. Ripon shot the ball 44 times, including 25 on goal. Four players scored multiple goals, including freshman Morgan Abert, who recorded the first hat trick of her collegiate career. The 13 goals by the Red Hawks is tied for the third-highest scoring output in school history.
Ripon wasted no time getting things going, with their first goal coming in the seventh minute on an unassisted goal by Rachel Martzahl. Abert quickly followed with three goals in the next seven minutes, the last one coming on an assist from Martzahl. Later in the half, Jessica Martzahl got into the act, with her first goal of the season. Katie Krueger also added a goal late in the half, giving Ripon a 6-0 halftime lead.
They were just getting started, as they would score seven times in the second half, with all seven goals coming from different players. Rachel Martzahl and Krueger were two of those seven, giving them each two goals for the game. Senior Emily Meyer also found the net, for her first collegiate goal.
The Red Hawks will look to keep their momentum going Friday night, when they'll face Edgewood College in Madison. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Eagles.
