RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks went toe-to-toe with defending conference champion Carroll University Saturday afternoon, trailing by a single goal at halftime. That wouldn't last though, as the Pioneers pulled away with three goals in the second half to grab a 4-0 victory.
Carroll notched their first goal of the game in the 12th minute, off the foot of Kendell Uttech, who scored on a break away. Ripon did a great job on defense for the remainder of the first half, but two and a half minutes into the second period, Carroll added their second score, a Dani Myszewski goal, off a corner kick from Liz Melcher. The Pioneers continued to pour it on in the second half, with a Megan Anderson goal that found the net after ricocheting off the post and in. Cody Callender would cap the scoring for the Pioneers in the 70th minute, assisted by Courtney Froelich.
Ripon goalkeeper Angelica Cooper played a solid 90 minutes between the pipes, recording eight saves on the day. Morgan Abert led the Red Hawks with two shots, both on goal, while Jessica Martzahl added the only other shot by a Ripon player. Carroll shot the ball 16 times, to just three for the Red Hawks.
Ripon will be in action again on Sunday, when they'll face St. Mary's University (MN), who won last year's match-up 4-1 in Ripon. Sunday's game will begin at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game against the Cardinals.
