NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Red Hawks were able to hang with a tough St. Olaf's team for one half of play Friday night, but the game got out of hand in the second period, with Ripon losing 10-0 in their 2008 season-opening game. St. Olaf's was superior in nearly every statistical category, getting off 31 shots to Ripon's two, while also getting the edge in corner kicks, 6-0.
The Oles got on the board quickly, with a Catie Christoffel goal in the fourth minute, off a corner kick from K.C. Beed. The two teams played evenly for the next several minutes, but St. Olaf's added a pair of goals in the 27th and 28th minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
They would add to that lead in the second half with a goal in the 49th minute, before Lindsay Howard and Ellie Steiner netted two goals apiece to put the game out of reach. Steiner would later get the hat trick with a goal in the 78th minute to cap the scoring.
Ripon managed two shots on goal in the game, both coming in the first half, off the feet of Jessica Martzahl and Lauren Frankiewicz. Brenda Zastrow saved eight shots as the Red Hawk's goalkeeper, while freshman Angelica Cooper saved three, while giving up just one.
The Red Hawks won't have much time to think about this loss, as they'll get right back on the field tomorrow night with a game at Macalester College (MN). That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
