JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Saturday's Midwest Conference game against Illinois College all came down to a penalty kick. With two and a half minutes remaining in double overtime, Ripon's Janel Karsten had a chance to play hero, and she didn't disappoint, finding the back of the net on the PK for a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Lady Blues.
Ripon (4-10, 2-4 MWC) looked like they may be in for an easy day early, as Jessica Martzahl took a pass from her sister Rachel in the fifth minute, scoring the first goal of the game. Rachel Martzahl then added to the Red Hawk lead with a goal in the 18th minute, which was assisted by freshman Morgan Abert. Illinois College cut Ripon's lead in half in the 28th minute with a goal from Candy Norville, making it a one-point game at halftime.
The Lady Blues (2-8-1, 0-4 MWC) tied the game shortly after halftime, making it anyone's game to win. Both defenses rose to the challenge for the remainder of regulation, sending the game to overtime tied at two. After one overtime, the game still wasn't decided, setting the stage for Karsten's heroics in the second overtime, which also marks her first goal of the season. Her game-winning score came seven minutes and 32 seconds into the second extra period.
Ripon will try to keep their momentum going Sunday at Monmouth College. That game will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Fighting Scots.
