BELOIT, Wis. - Ripon picked up their first conference win of the season Saturday, in their third MWC game, a feat that took them five games to achieve last year. The Red Hawks defeated Beloit College 2-1, holding on for the win after building a two-goal advantage mid-way through the second half.
The Red Hawks (2-6, 1-2 MWC) scored their first goal of the game just before halftime, when Jessica Martzahl found the net, unassisted, giving Ripon the lead at halftime, for just the second time this season.
They would add to that lead in the second half on a Martzahl-to-Martzahl goal. Jessica found sister Rachel in the 73rd minute to give the Red Hawks some breathing room. That breathing room was taken away by Beloit (3-3, 0-2 MWC) eight minutes later, when they got on the board for the first time. The Ripon defense then rose to the occasion for the remainder of the game, including goalkeeper Angelica Cooper, who finished with eight saves.
Ripon will try for their second consecutive victory on Tuesday, when they'll travel to Lakeland College. That game will begin at 4:30 p.m.
