RIPON, Wis. - Ripon allowed two goals in each half Saturday, as St. Mary's (MN) defeated the Red Hawks 4-1. Ripon managed zero shots in the first half, but were able to get off three in the second half, including one score to make the game competitive.
St. Mary's (7-1) scored their first goal in the 21st minute when Keirra Metcalfe got the ball to Bridgette Baggio to break the scoreless tie. Two minutes before halftime, the Cardinals added their second goal, this time by Amy Sibik.
St. Mary's added to their lead just after halftime, as Bethany Kaufmann scored in the 50th minute, giving SMU a 3-0 lead. The Red Hawks made things interesting ten minutes later, when Rachel Martzahl took a pass from Janel Karsten and went one-on-one with her defender, before putting the ball in the back of the net. The two teams played great defense from there, but St. Mary's was able to ice the win in the 82nd minute when Sibik connected on her second goal of the day. The Cardinals out shot Ripon 28-3 on the day. All three Ripon shots, including two from Martzahl were on goal.
The Red Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday, when they'll host Lakeland College. Game time is set for
4:30 p.m. at Prairie Field.
