Red Hawks Run Out of Steam Against Marian

September 4, 2007

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon women's soccer team showed flashes of where the program is headed in Tuesday's game against Marian College, as all three of their goals were scored by freshmen. The Red Hawks took control of the game in the first half, but let it slip through their fingers, allowing two second half goals, en route to a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Sabres.

Marian (1-2) struck first, just two minutes into the contest with a goal by Jessica Malterer, which was assisted by Carly Saunders. Ripon (0-2) then got their offense going 13 minutes later, as the Martzahl show began at Prairie Field. The Red Hawks tied things up on a goal by freshman Rachel Martzahl, who went one-on-one with the GoalKeeper and won the battle. Four minutes later Rachel helped out her sister Jessica, assisting on Jessica's first goal of her collegiate career. A minute and a half later, Ripon took a 3-1 advantage, just 20 minutes into the contest, when Rachel Martzahl recorded her second collegiate goal on an assist from sophomore Janel Karsten. Marian was down, but not out, scoring another goal in the 27th minute, giving Ripon a one goal lead heading into the break.

Ripon's offense couldn't get much going in the second half. Marian on the other hand tied things up in the 54th minute thanks to Malterer's second goal of the game on a ball that deflected off the crossbar and into the net. The Sabres put the dagger in the hearts of the Red Hawks in the 67th minute on Kim Kriese's second goal of the game, for the 4-3 victory.

The Red Hawks will try to put this loss behind them, as they begin to focus on Midwest Conference play. Ripon will open their conference season Saturday at home against Lake Forest College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Prairie Field.
