Red Hawks End Season With Win

October 28, 2007

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks ended their 2007 regular season just the way they had hoped - with a victory. Ripon defeated Illinois College 6-2 on Sunday, snapping a six-game losing streak. The Red Hawks dominated much of the game, out shooting the Lady Blues 22 to seven, including a 15 to three advantage in the first half.

Ripon (4-14, 2-7) built a four goal lead in the game, thanks to three first half goals. Bess Liebergen broke a scoreless tie in the ninth minute with her first goal of the season. Karen Hanadel added to that lead in the 39th minute, as she recorded her second goal of the season on a deflection off the crossbar. Ten seconds later, Ripon was on the board again, as Rachel Martzahl found the back of the net, giving her a team-best 11 goals on the year.

The second half was a little more competitive, but Ripon was able to open up a four goal lead on Sarah Banister's first goal of the season. Illinois College (3-13-1, 1-8) would make things interesting late in the game, as they scored two goals within a two minute span. Jessica Foote recorded the first goal in the 79th minute. That was quickly followed by a goal by Gina Libbra. Two minutes later, Ripon was able to ice the game thanks to a little help from IC, as the Red Hawks were credited with a point on an own goal. Amanda Braga added her first score of the season, putting an exclamation point on the Ripon victory.
