RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks used three first half goals to cruise by Northland Baptist 4-2, giving Ripon their second victory of the season. Ripon got off a season-high 38 shots in the game, compared to 29 shots for Northland Baptist. Ripon GoalKeeper Amber Rico recorded 19 saves.
The Red Hawks got on the board first, thanks to Jessica Martzahl's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Martzahl scored her unassisted goal in the 21st minute, but Northland Baptist tied the game just three minutes later on a Shannon Murdock goal. Ripon took the lead back in the 27th minute, as Karen Hanadel's header was good for her first goal of the season, off a pass from Janel Karsten. Ripon extended their lead later in the half with goals from Brenda Zastrow and Rachel Martzahl. Martzahl's goal marks her seventh of the season, tying her sister Jessica for the team lead.
Northland Baptist cut the Red Hawk lead to two in the second half with the only goal by either team after halftime. NBBC's Stephanie Zondervan scored on an unassisted breakaway goal to cap the scoring. Northland goalkeeper Julia Becker made 11 saves, while her replacement Vanessa Villanueva made three of her own.
Ripon will continue their seven-game road trip this weekend, as they'll travel to Knox College on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Galesburg, Ill. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Prairie Fire.
