GALESBURG, Ill. - The Red Hawks grabbed their first conference win of the season Saturday, using four goals in each half to defeat Knox College 8-1. Ripon was in attack mode from the outset, out shooting the Prairie Fire 27 to 18. Ripon's Amber Rico was solid in the goal, making nine saves, while playing all 90 minutes.
The Red Hawks (3-8, 1-4) got on the board first, just five minutes into the contest, when Knox inadvertently knocked the ball into their own goal for a 1-0 Red Hawk lead. One minute later, Ripon was up by two, thanks to a goal by Jessica Martzahl, which was assisted by Janel Karsten. Karsten showed off her scoring as well, recording Ripon's third goal in the 17th minute. Brenda Zastrow added a fourth goal in the 28th minute, giving Ripon a four goal lead at the half.
Ripon didn't let up in the second half, as Rachel Martzahl got into the action with a goal in the 55th minute. Karsten produced her second goal of the game just two minutes later. Knox (1-9-1, 0-4) would then get on the board, thanks to a goal by Rosie Smith, but it was too little, too late. Karsten scored the hat trick off a pass from Brenda Zastrow, which was followed by Jessica Martzahl's second goal of the game to cap the scoring, giving the Red Hawk's their second consecutive win.
Ripon will try for their third straight victory on Sunday, as they'll travel to Grinnell College to take on the Pioneers. That game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be followed by the men's contest.
