Red Hawks Net First Win of the Season

September 11, 2007

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Red Hawk women's soccer team must have been saving their goals for Tuesday afternoon. After scoring a total of four goals in their first three games, all losses, Ripon tripled their goal output for the season, defeating Alverno College 8-2 to grab their first win of the season.

Ripon wasted no time getting started, as Jessica Martzahl started the scoring just three minutes into the game. Not to be outdone, Rachel Martzahl added a goal of her own to give Ripon an early lead. The Red Hawks were no where close to done, as they rattled off three more goals in the first half. Brenda Zastrow's goal was followed by another by Jessica Martzahl, before Melissa Meierhofer gave Ripon a 5-0 lead just before halftime.

The second half began much like the first, with another Martzahl sighting. Rachel scored on a pass from Jessica in the 55th minute. Just 25 seconds later, Zastrow booted her second goal of the game on an assist from Rachel Martzahl, who would score her third goal of the game in the 68th minute. Alverno tacked on two goals late in the game, but Ripon would walk away victorious.

The Red Hawks will try to keep their offensive explosion going on Thursday, as they'll open their conference season by traveling to Carroll College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis.
