RIPON, Wis. -- Ripon's women's soccer team began 2006 with a
bang by defeating Northland Baptist 4-1 in both team's season opening
games. The Red Hawks opened up the scoring in the 14th minute when
senior Jill Jones caught the goalie out of position and hammered
the ball into the goal on an open net score. Northland Baptist
would tie the game just eight minutes later however when Joanna
Hall stole the ball away from a Ripon player and scored on a breakaway
with only the goalie in her way. Ripon scored once more, just before
the half when Musu Jammeh scored her first of two goals to go up
2-1 as the two teams headed to the locker rooms.
The Red Hawks displayed some dominance in the second half as much
of the game was played on Northland Baptist's side of the field.
Jammeh gave Ripon some breathing room in the 79th minute, scoring
on an unassisted goal. Jones would cap the scoring six minutes
later as she dribbled around the defender to put the game away
with her second goal of the contest.
Ripon outshot the Warriors 28-6 on the day. Northland Baptist
attempted just two shots in the second half thanks to Ripon's suffocating
'D' and nice ball control. When Northland Baptist did get a shot
off, Brenda Zastrow was there to keep it out of the goal. Zastrow
finished with three saves on four shot on goal attempts.
Next up for the Red Hawks will be Lakeland College in Ripon's
first road game of the season on September 6th. Gametime is set
for 4:00.
