Sheboygan, Wis. -- The Ripon women's soccer team has already accomplished
something in two games that it took them the entire season to do
last year. With their 2-0 victory over Lakeland on Wednesday, the
Red Hawks have already won as many games in '06 as they did in
'05.
The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team scoring
in the first half, with both teams playing great defense. There
were only 5 shots between the two teams in the half.
The second half looked like it would turn out much like the first.
There wasn't any scoring early on in the second period, as each
team continued to play stifleing 'D'. Then, in the 79th minute,
Ripon's Jill Jones broke the scoreless tie with her third goal
of the season. Lakeland tried their best to attack the goal after
that and tie it up, but their strategy backfired when Jones got
the ball all alone on a breakaway in the 88th minute. Jones put
the ball in the back of the net to seal the game. She now has four
goals in just two games.
Ripon will try to keep things going Saturday, when they'll look
for their third win to start the season. The Red Hawks will travel
to Lake Forest for their first conference game of the year. Gametime
is scheduled for 1:00.
