EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Ripon women's golf team opened their 2008 campaign at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational over the weekend. After the dust had settled at the two-day event, the Red Hawks found themselves in 23rd place out of 26 teams, with a two-round team score of 807. That was seven strokes better than Midwest Conference foe St. Norbert College. Gustavus Adolphus (MN) was the winner of the event, shooting a 646 on the weekend.

Ripon was led by freshman Anne Rabacal, who was 49-over par for the tournament. That tied her for 105th place among the 141 individual competitors. She shot a 95 during first round action, and finished with a second round score of 99 on the par 72 course. Amber Steichen was just one stroke behind Rabacal, with a 195, which placed her in 109th place. Amanda Peterson was the only Ripon golfer whose score improved during the second day of action. She went from shooting a first-round 107, to a 99 the following day. Amanda Holdshoe and Katie Schumacher finished with scores of 212 and 233, respectively.

"Saturday was a shaky start to the season for everyone. Mill Run is not a difficult golf course and we should have played better, but our scoring on Wild Ridge versus the field, relative to the first day, was actually very impressive," head coach Cody Pinkston said. "Only two of 25 teams scored better at Wild Ridge than at Mill Run, and right behind them was Ripon at just one stroke higher. When you consider that the average team score was 22 strokes worse on Sunday, I think we rose very well to the challenge."

The Red Hawks will look to improve on their scores next week, when they'll travel to Platteville, Wis., to take part in the UW-Platteville Invite. The two day event will begin Saturday at the Platteville Golf Club.

"We got off the tee fairly well this past weekend, but didn’t hit many greens or make many putts, so irons and putting will be our focus going into Platteville on Saturday."
