GALESBURG, Ill. - The format changed but the results didn't. Moving
to a three-day, 54-hole event for the first time didn't stop Illinois
College from claiming its fourth consecutive Midwest Conference
Women's Golf Championship. The Lady Blues shot a combined
1017 (345-347-325) to win by 110 strokes over second-place Grinnell
College (1127) at the Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg, Ill.
With Illinois College in control since the first round, the only
drama was Carey Cappel's (Illinois College) quest to become the
fourth MWC golfer to win four consecutive conference medalist honors.
Trailing teammate Kristen Schmalz by three shots entering Sunday's
play, Cappel carded a tournament-best even-par-round of 74 to win
by nine shots. Cappel finished with a 245 (86-85-74) to
overtake Schmalz (81-87-86-254). Janelle Kuhn gave the
Lady Blues the top three individuals with a 255 total after a 78
Sunday. Cappel and Kuhn had the tournament's only rounds
under 80.
Andrea Liebelt, of St. Norbert College, finished fourth overall
with a 259 (92-81-86). Allyson Cooper from host Knox College
was fifth after an 83 Sunday gave her a 264 total. Meredith
Robinson (sixth with a 266), Leah Reuschel (eighth with a 270)
and Emma Reuschel (10th with a 274) gave Illinois College six of
the top 10 individuals in the tournament. Knox's Ashton
Heath was seventh with a 270 and Gina Heckly, from Ripon College,
finished ninth with a 270.
St. Norbert finished third as a team with an 1132 total (400-361-371). Monmouth
College was fourth with an 1140, Ripon placed fifth was an 1156,
Knox was sixth with an 1159 and Carroll College finished seventh
with an 1173. Beloit College was represented by one golfer,
Allison Goodman, who finished 20th individually with a 284.
