RIPON, Wis. – For the first time in more than two years, the Red Hawk women's basketball celebrated a third consecutive victory after defeating Lawrence University 66-51 Wednesday night to complete a sweep of the season series with the Vikings. The game that was never really in doubt, as Ripon led for the entire game, with the exception of a tie three minutes into the game. That was due, in part to Ripon's 47 percent (26-55) shooting, while holding Lawrence to 35 percent (18-51) from the field.
Ripon (7-14, 4-10) struck first on a basket by Tiffany Goebel, but Lawrence (4-16, 1-12) answered right back with a Sarah Ehlinger basket to tie the game with 17 and a half minutes left in the first half. That would be as close as Lawrence would get all night. Ripon scored eight of the next nine points to go ahead by seven. After Lawrence cut that lead to three on a 3-pointer by Jenny Stoner, Ripon went on another run, this time outscoring the Vikings 15-4 in a five minute span, to take command of the game by 14 points. They kept Lawrence at arms length the rest of the half, thanks to 12 second-chance points, going to the locker room with a 35-29 lead.
Ripon turned up the heat in the second period, going on a 18-9 run to start the half, capped by a Jessica DeHamer basket, which gave the Red Hawks a 15-point advantage. The game remained in double digits the rest of the night, with Ripon going up by as many as 18 points, on a lay-up by Jessica Goudreau with two and a half minutes to play.
Emily Meyer recorded the fourth double-double of her career, scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, nine of which came in the first half. DeHamer also chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while also pulling down six boards. Goudreau was the spark off the bench, scoring a career-high nine points on 4-of-6 shooting. She was part of a Red Hawk bench that produced 33 points on the night. Ripon also managed to work the ball inside on several occasions, scoring 36 points in the paint.
Lawrence was led by Caresse Reiland's 24 points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots. She was the only Viking in double figures, with the next best scorer, Annie Kaiser, scoring seven points off the bench. Lawrence got six points apiece from Ehlinger, Laura Aerts, and Jenny Stoner. They turned the ball over 19 times, while Ripon made just 11 miscues.
Ripon will try to continue to finish the season strong in their 2008 home finale next Wednesday against Carroll College. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Pioneers. Both games can be seen on www.midwestconference.tv.
