February 9, 2008

Box Score

RIPON, Wis. – The Red Hawks were never really threatened in Saturday's game against Knox College, leading from the opening basket, en route to a 76-49 victory, marking Ripon's first two-game winning streak of the season. The Red Hawk defense was all over the court, forcing Knox into into 26 turnovers, which they converted into 30 points.

Ripon (6-14, 3-10) came out firing, scoring the first six points of the game on two Jessica DeHamer baskets and a lay-up by Christina Schneider. Knox cut that lead to two with four quick points of their own, but that's as close as the score would be the rest of the day. After a Knox basket cut the deficit to 16-7, Ripon held the Prairie Fire scoreless for the next five minutes, allowing them to build an even bigger lead. Knox (3-17, 1-12) went over seven minutes without a field goal, allowing Ripon to take an 18 point lead, thanks to a 12-3 run. The two teams traded baskets for the final couple minutes and the Red Hawks took a 16-point advantage into the locker room.

The second half began much like the first, with Ripon knocking down shot after shot. Emily Meyer made the first two baskets of the half, before Tiffany Goebel added to that with a bucket of her own, extending the lead to 22 points. Leading by 18 later in the half, Ripon used a 20-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, going up by 34 and putting the game well out of reach.

Everyone got into the action for the Red Hawks, as 13 players scored at least one point. They were led by freshmen Meyer and Staci Dieringer, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, with all of Dieringer's points coming in the second half. DeHamer added nine points, eight rebounds, and six steals, while Tiffany Goebel recorded seven points, five assists, and four steals. Ashley Meister and Amanda Lindauer each finished with six points off a bench that combined to score 40 points. Ripon shot 47 percent (31-66) in the game, while holding Knox to just 33 percent (19-57) shooting. The Red Hawks combined for 20 steals and 25 assists in the game, while also winning the rebounding battle.

The Prairie Fire were led by Jenna Finley, with 13 points. Andie Allison chipped in with seven points and five rebounds, while Kate Moon posted six points and 10 boards. Knox finished the game shooting 15 percent (2-13) from 3-point range.

Ripon will try for their third consecutive win Wednesday when they'll face Lawrence University. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest against the Vikings. Both games can be seen live on www.midwestconference.tv.
